Other ideas to support your child in their learning can be found below. Remember to keep it interesting and fun!
Maths
Ask questions about time and practise reading analogue clocks e.g. What is the time? How many minutes until dinner?
Create practical problems at home to solve such as building something and working out the space (area) needed to put it.
Help your child see the link between maths and everyday life or possible career opportunities for example in sports there are batting averages, the percentage in the oppositions half, penalties converted, in retail, there are price discounts, percentages off, price per unit, in building there are many measurement opportunities (length, width, angles, weight etc.). The more they see maths in everyday life the more relevant it is for them.
Practise basic facts including addition, subtraction and times tables using cards, songs or computer games such as timestables.co.nz , maths.prototec.co.nz or other online maths games. Students need to have mastered their timetables by Year 7 and 8.
Writing
Write an email or letter to send to a relative together.
Create a blog or website about something that really interests them e.g. Reviewing games or a Recipe blog. Blogger.com is a suitable programme or they could create a Google Site.
Encourage your child to keep a journal of ideas, collect things in it, write down interesting topics or words or record a recent trip.
Let your child see you be a writer and that you write for many different purposes - letters, work assignments, emails etc.
Provide a range of reading materials around the house such as magazines, newspapers, picture books, novels, encyclopedias, comics and cookbooks.
Play games like Scrabble, Bananagrams, Boggle, word finders or crosswords to encourage learning about vocabulary.
